Evaluating Performance With SQL Server Monitoring Counters
SQL Server counters are tools used in SQL Server monitoring. They allow you to measure the various factors of SQL server performance. Gathering this data over a period of time lets you view past trends to learn how to optimize your server for the future. You can utilize counters for your preferred metrics. Using these counters will make it fast and simple to find and fix SQL server performance issues.

Below is a list of five common SQL Server counters to employ as part of your SQL Server optimization efforts.
1. Buffer Manager: Page Life Expectancy
The page life expectancy counter measures how long pages stay in the buffer cache. The time is measured in seconds. The longer a page stays in memory the more likely SQL Server queries will not need to read from disk. As page life expectancy is increased so will the performance of the system.
2. Batch Requests/Second
The amount of batches a SQL server can get per second is measured by batch requests/per second. It shows the activity that a SQL server is currently processing. As the numbers grow, so do the number of query executions. SQL Server optimization requires periodic measurements to determine SQL Server performance over time.
3. SQL Compilations/Second
The measurement of SQL compilations/second refers to the amount of execution plan a SQL server can compile in a second. This resource intensive process can negatively impact your SQL performance. The comparison of SQL compilations/second and batch requests/second enables DBAs to determine if compilations are a cause for poor SQL performance.
4. Buffer Cache Hit Ratio
The buffer cache hit ratio measures how often SQL Server finds data pages in its buffer cache when a query requests one. Numbers close to 100 indicate better performance, as SQL server was able to get data for queries from memory instead from disk.

5. Lock Waits/Second
Occasionally, SQL Server must lock system resources in order to manage large numbers of concurrent users. Lock waits/seconds is a measurement that counts how many times a SQL server couldn't retain a lock. SQL server performance can be degraded by the inability to retain a lock. Ideally, zero is your SQL monitoring target. Larger numbers indicate decreased performance.
