Cooking Up Deep Fried Turkey Safely
October is a great time to have a practice session making deep fried turkey before the big event at Thanksgiving. If you don't have any experience deep frying a turkey, then it's a good idea to have some practice. You can still serve turkey in October with lots of time to clear up the leftovers before Thanksgiving.
So go retrieve the turkey fryer from wherever you left it - the attic, the basement, the garage - and get it all cleaned up and ready. If you don't already have one, you can find lots of ones to choose from online Buying the cooking oil is your next step. The most recommend oil is peanut oil, but be certain that no one has a peanut allergy. It's also a good time to look up some recipes for some dry rubs you might want to season your turkey with.
Now let's get the trial run started. You don't really want to wait until the pressure of Thanksgiving Day to try deep frying a turkey for the first time. It's a time to be thankful for your good fortune, friends and family. Not a time to stress over how to cook your turkey.
If you deep fry a turkey more than a month early you'll be much more comfortable doing it Thanksgiving Trust me, as you'll be dealing with five gallons of boiling oil, you're going to want to feel pretty confident.
Getting things ready also means checking that your propane tank is full and making sure you have a fully charged fire extinguisher handy. Now get together all the equipment and accessories and don't forget your goggles and your gloves. Keep everything together so it's easy to find for Thanksgiving as well.
Don't forget that when you deep fry your turkey there aren't going to be any drippings you can use to make gravy. So you need to decide how you're going to make gravy. You can boil the neck and giblets to make broth for the gravy. Or, you can use ready-made gravy from a can or a packet. A deep fried turkey is really juicy, but odds are that you and your guests would still like to have a traditional gravy. Be sure to plan ahead.
If you're a seasoned pro or a nervous novice, having a practice session just makes a lot of sense. Being sure of your skills will allow you to relax and enjoy Thanksgiving. The more you can prepare ahead of time, the smoother your day will be and that's certainly something to be thankful for.
