Where Should Oracle Performance Tuning Be Directed
The following are five places where tuning efforts should be focused
- Eradicate Wait Events
Use historical data on database performance to determine where system bottlenecks are occurring and create an execution plan to eliminate them. After you have examined your wait-time information, you will be ready to move to the next step
- Tune the Operating System
In order to understand whether you may want to get new hardware, you should tune and monitor your operating system CPU, I/O and memory usage
- Examining Database Design
Poor system performance usually results from a poor database design. If you are capable of making changes in your table structures and indexes to adhere to “best practices” of the industry, this is a great time to do it. if not, make incremental changes until wholesale changes can be made.
- Tweaking the Memory
Properly size your database buffers (shared_pool, buffer cache, log buffer, etc) by looking at your wait events, buffer hit ratios, system swapping and paging, etc. Additionally, you may want to pin large objects into memory which will stop frequent reloads
- Tuning Disk I/O
It’s imperative for database files to be appropriately placed and sized to utilize the maximum disk subsystem. It’s wise to keep an eye out for anything that is happening very frequently like disk sorts, missing indexes etc.
- Application Tuning
Coding optimal SQL queries is often the best way to resolve performance issues. During off-peak hours, you may want to ways to increase the performance and efficiency of SQL queries.
