SQL Server 2008 Administration in Action $37.28 SQL Server 2008 Administration isn’t a standard SQL Server tutorial-there are dozens of those to choose from. Instead, this book breaks down the role of "SQL Server Administrator" into its key focus areas and tasks and details the techniques and best practices that make an administrator effective. In this book, a reader can quickly identify a task and find the best practice associated with it. For example, a reader looking for information about indexing would find step-by-step procedures for identifying and dropping unused indexes, creating missing indexes, selecting the appropriate clustered index, and so forth. Each technique is presented in a clear, straightforward style and in the order of the typical lifecycle of a SQL Server system. This allows a reader to easily open the book at the appropriate page and focus on what you need to know for each specific situation. While most techniques will work for all versions of SQL Server, this book is current for the recent final release of SQL Server 2008. |

Response Time Analysis for SQL Performance Tuning
Response time analysis is a new approach to application improvement and SQL performance tuning that enables DBAs and developers to manage their databases guided by the most important criteria: what causes application end-users to wait. Also referred to as wait time analysis, it allows IT teams to align their SQL performance tuning efforts with service level delivery for end users.
Explore some of the benefits of SQL performance tuning.
Response time methods measure the entire time it takes for an action to be complete instead of monitoring server health statistics and then making a guess about how these things affect the overall performance health. The top implementations break down this information into easy to measure steps so that the exact cause of application delays can be studied and identified. Since the database primary mission is to respond with a result, response time is the most important criteria in making database performance decisions.
Response Time vs. Conventional Analysis
Health measures and execution ratios are the main focus of normal SQL performance tools. Even with a sophisticated presentation these statistics do not reflect the end-user experience or reveal where the problem originated. Simply seeing that an application took place thousands of times doesn’t say anything about whether it was involved with, or was the cause of a delay in application response time.
Distinguishing Response Time From Conventional Methods
- Measure response time for an action to take place, from receipt of request to beginning of response.
- Every SQL query is measured separately so that the response time can be looked at individually. When the traditional total response time was measured in the past, the information was not as useful.
- Each small step in the entire SQL query is measured. Treating the instance as a black-box without seeing where the time is consumed internally does not help problem solving.
See how SQL server tuning can help.
SQL Server Tuning Done Right the First Time
DBAs are able to find the exact location of a problem with response time analysis. For DBAs this means that preventative action is now possible.
