When you are out and about with your family, either running errands or having fun, it is not always an easy task to find a restroom with soap and water to wash your hands. With frequent cleansing being the best way to keep germs and illnesses at bay, it’s a good idea to have an alternative. It is common knowledge that washing your hands frequently is the easiest and most effective way to stay healthy. Considering all of the things that we handle and touch on a daily basis brings this importance into perspective. Phone handsets, door handles, and street poles are all things that we, and millions of other people, touch every single day without using Purell. With frequent touching comes a wealth of pathogens that can easily be transferred from everyday objects into your body.
If you pay attention to this the next time you go out, you will likely see someone cough or sneeze into their hand, or even wipe their nose. Now whatever that person touches is going to be covered in cold germs and you are more than likely going to come into contact with a surface that they, or someone else, has touched.
The fast track for germs and pathogens to enter your body is your hands. When we touch something that someone else has touched, we do not usually even give it a second thought. This action is never something that we think about, but perhaps we should.
Avoiding cold germs is not the only reason to practice good hygiene. We also want to avoid spreading our germs about as well! It is important to cleanse your hands after visiting the restroom, before eating, or after you cough, sneeze, or blow your nose.
The best method for keeping your hands clean is to wash them frequently with soap and water. In school, small children are taught to wash their hands for the duration of the alphabet song or any other song that is fifteen to twenty seconds long. Remember that thoroughness is as important as the length of time you spend washing. Be sure to wash all parts of your hands, including the front, back, and in between your fingers. Of course, washing with soap and water is not always an option. For those times, using alcohol-based cleansers is an effective alternative.
Most commercial waterless cleansers contain some sort of alcohol as their active ingredient. Usually this is isopropanol, ethanol, n-propanol, or povidone-iodine. Look for one with a minimum of 60 percent alcohol content. Anything less will not be effective in killing germs. The best types contain between seventy and ninety five percent alcohol content.
Practicing good personal hygiene is the best weapon you have against pathogens and viruses that can lead to illness. To keep you and your family happy and healthy, carry a bottle of hand sanitizer with you whenever you go out.
