Five Mistakes When Building and Maintaining a SQL Server Database
Constructing and maintaining a SQL server database environment is like trying to hit a moving target. There are many parameters to consider for design, support, and troubleshooting. Disregarding certain details or making small mistakes can really make this a difficult job.
Find out about SQL server monitor benefits.
These are 5 typical mistakes that occur in the creation and maintenance of a SQL server database environment. There are definitely more mistakes that are made but you should be mindful of these.
1. Insufficient Backup Planning
If you aren't backing up your databases often you are leaving yourself open for disaster. Backup planning should involve regular backups, ability to gather and recover backed up data, and use of locations other than database server for storage purposes. Backup early and backup often. You will never want to come across a scenario where you don't have the backed up data.
2. Use of Ad Hoc Queries
The database should only be accessed by users through stored procedures on the application level. Ad hoc queries enable users to write their own code against the database with SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE permissions. Stored procedures enable only EXECUTE permissions preserving data integrity and providing improved performance through compiling and caching. The right way to optimize and SQL server is to eliminate a majority or all ad hoc queries.
3. Not Enough Testing
Putting code into production without testing is nearly as bad having a poor backup plan. It is certainly a mistake not to provide for beta and sustained testing. Optimum pre-production testing must mimic production environments as closely as possible. A small database meant for testing purposes probably won't scale well to a fully functional production environment. Doing the correct testing now will help prevent fixes needed in the future.
Discover more advantages of SQL optimization.
4. Lack of Monitoring
There should not be an expectation that your database will be running smoothly with no performance problems. Quality SQL optimization will need constant performance monitoring so that users are always getting the best possible experience at any given time. Not performing the proper monitoring opens you up to slowed performance due to applications and queries using up system resources. SQL server queries and hardware environments must be monitored and optimized to ensure proper performance. An SQL monitor will enable you to capture performance trends over time so that you can create tuning plans to improve performance.
5. Improper Process for Change Management
There needs to be a lot of thought put into changing even the most stable production environments. It necessitates that you test, plan, and implement properly. Having a change management process provides some structure for how changes are made. If database changes don't go according to plan, having the right documentation of how, why and when changes should be made will provide for quick reversions. Diligent pre-production testing should also be a part of your change management process. One simple hint: document everything.

3ware RAID Controller Memory Backup Battery $125 LSI battery backup units are add-on modules that protect against data loss in the event of a server or power failure by providing emergency power to the cache memory. When power is restored, the data not yet written to the hard drives can be retrieved from cache memory. |
