5 SQL Server Monitoring Counters
SQL server monitoring utilizes SQL server counters. They grant you the ability to measure the different elements of SQL server performance. If you collect historical data you can use it now and in the future to properly optimize your SQL server. Counters can be used for metrics of your choosing. Counters aid DBAs in identifying and solving SQL server performance issues.

Here are 5 common SQL server counters you could use while optimizing your SQL server.
1. Buffer Manager: Page Life Expectancy
A counter of page life expectancy will measure the amount of time a page stays in the buffer cache. Their unit of measure is in seconds. If a page remains in memory it does not require SQL server queries to read from a disk. System performance increases with longer page life expectancy.
2. Batch Requests/Second
The amount of batches a SQL server can get per second is measured by batch requests/per second. This will indicate the amount of activity a SQL server is experiencing. A high number means that there are a higher amount of query executions. SQL Server optimization requires periodic measurements to determine SQL Server performance over time.
3. SQL Compilations/Second
The measurement of SQL compilations/second refers to the amount of execution plan a SQL server can compile in a second. This procedure is very resource intensive and can hurt your SQL server performance. Comparing this measurement against batch requests/second allows you to identify whether or not compilations are hindering performance.
4. Buffer Cache Hit Ratio
A buffer cache hit ratio will determine how frequently SQL servers find data pages in their buffer cache when a query requests it. Performance improves as the number reaches closer to 100. Essentially it means that a SQL server was able to grab necessary data from memory and not from a disk.

5. Lock Waits/Second
Occasionally, SQL Server must lock system resources in order to manage large numbers of concurrent users. The lock waits/seconds counter measures the number of times that SQL Server was unable to retain a lock. Failure to retain a lock negatively impacts SQL Server performance. In a perfect world this number would be 0. As numbers stretch further from 0 performance will decrease.
