Five Typical Mistakes For Constructing and Maintaining SQL Server Databases

Building and maintaining a SQL Server database environment is like hitting a moving target. There are many parameters to consider for design, support, and troubleshooting. Making a mistake in those areas or overlooking certain details and tasks only make the job harder.

Find out about SQL server monitor benefits.

Here are five frequent mistakes that happen with the construction and maintenance of a SQL server database environment. There are definitely more mistakes that are made but you should be mindful of these.

1. Insufficient Backup Planning
Failure to regularly backup your databases is an invitation for disaster. Proper backup procedures include a backup plan that 1) makes regular backups, 2) tests your ability to retrieve and restore data from backup systems, and 3) uses alternative locations other than the database server for data storage. Backup early and backup often. You will never want to come across a scenario where you don't have the backed up data.

2. Using an Ad Hoc Query
The database should only be accessed by users through stored procedures on the application level. Permissions like INSERT, UPDATE, SELECT, and DELETE are usable when users are writing their on code with an Ad Hoc query. Stored procedures enable only EXECUTE permissions preserving data integrity and providing improved performance through compiling and caching. Proper SQL optimization begins with removing most or all ad hoc queries.

3. Improper Testing
Similar to having an inferior backup plan, putting untested code into production can open you up to some big problems. Not providing for beta and on-going testing is also a mistake. An optimal pre-production test should be as similar as possible to the production environment. A small database meant for testing purposes probably won't scale well to a fully functional production environment. Doing the correct testing now will help prevent fixes needed in the future.

Discover more advantages of SQL optimization.

4. Lack of Monitoring
You should not assume that your database is already optimized and has no issues with performance. Continuing SQL optimization will require you to constantly perform performance monitoring to be sure that all users are getting a seamless experience. Not performing the proper monitoring opens you up to slowed performance due to applications and queries using up system resources. SQL server hardware environments and queries need to have constant monitoring and optimization to make certain that performance is as good as it can get. An SQL monitor will enable you to capture performance trends over time so that you can create tuning plans to improve performance.

5. Improper Process for Change Management
Changing a stable production environment should not be done light-heartedly. It necessitates that you test, plan, and implement properly. Utilizing a process for change management will provide improved structure for changes that need to be made. Documenting how, why and when changes need to be made allows for fast reversions in instances where a change to the database didn't go as planned. Diligent pre-production testing should also be a part of your change management process. Two words of advice: document everything.

A Web-Based Introduction to Programming: Essential Algorithms, Syntax, and Control Structures Using PHP and XHTML

A Web-Based Introduction to Programming: Essential Algorithms, Syntax, and Control Structures Using PHP and XHTML

$55

A Web-Based Introduction to Programming is designed for use in introductory programming, programming logic and design, or Web programming courses, and for anyone seeking a painless way to learn the basics of programming by developing small Web applications. The book is clearly written, using consistent examples in every chapter and step-by-step descriptions of standard programming procedures. Each chapter follows precise learning outcomes that are accurately tested by the end-of-chapter quizzes and exercises. A Web-Based Introduction to Programming keeps the focus on the need for beginning programmers to learn essential syntax and control structures with minimal complexity. Each chapter focuses on a single topic and related material is provided in appendices. Students learn to convert requirements into algorithms, and then develop small Web-based applications using a combination of PHP and HTML. All required software is provided and can be installed quickly and easily in minutes under Windows, Macintosh OS X or Linux. The software can be installed entirely on a USB drive so that students can carry their entire work environment with them (no need for special classroom installation). Significant changes to the second edition include: the latest version of the standalone Web server; even more code examples; additional code exercises for each chapter; flow chart examples to help explain control structures; more in-depth coverage of associative arrays and Web sessions; more extensive discussion of include files; additional references to emerging technologies. The Web site www.mikeokane.com/textbooks/WebTech/ includes all materials found on the CD, and also provides access to Flash tutorials, additional exercises, test banks, slide presentations, quiz solutions, code solutions, and other instructional resources. The textbook blog (http://introtoprogramming.wordpress.com/) allows students to get help with common questions related to the software and the textbook
