Response Time Analysis for SQL Performance Tuning

For DBAs, the newest take on application and SQL performance improvement allows them to manage the database with a better understanding of the one thing that can really help improve overall performance: recognizing end user wait time and learning how to fix it. This analysis is also frequently referred to as a wait time analysis and it is useful for helping IT support SQL performance tuning with service level delivery for end users.

Explore some of the benefits of SQL performance tuning.

Response time methods measure the entire time it takes for an action to be complete instead of monitoring server health statistics and then making a guess about how these things affect the overall performance health. The best implementations break down the time into discrete and individually measurable steps, and identify exactly which steps in which operations cause application delays. Response time is key to making decisions on how to improve a database since it’s key function is to get an action done as fast as possible.

Response Time vs. Conventional Analysis
Health measures and execution ratios are the main focus of normal SQL performance tools. Even with a sophisticated presentation these statistics do not reflect the end-user experience or reveal where the problem originated. Simply seeing that an application took place thousands of times doesn’t say anything about whether it was involved with, or was the cause of a delay in application response time.

Key criteria to distinguish Response Time vs. Conventional analysis methods:

- Response time measures the complete time is takes from beginning to end for an action to take place.
- Each SQL query is kept isolated so only it’s data can be studied piece by piece. This is far more useful than looking at the total response time for issue identification.
- Each small step in the entire SQL query is measured. Problem solving can’t move forward when every instance is treated like a black-box of time consumed internally.

See how SQL server tuning can help.

SQL Server Tuning Done Right the First Time
DBAs are able to find the exact location of a problem with response time analysis. This means that preventative action can be taken before wait time affects end-user service levels and further SQL Server tuning complications.
