Moving WordPress Databases To New Servers - A Tutorial
If you have found this page, I would have absolutely no doubt in my mind that you have already experienced the frustrations that are associated with how to migrate WordPress databases to an entirely new location on a new hosting account, or even a new domain. Here’s the thing. I’ve had some practice, and I believe that you will be able to get this process down pat quite easily too. Today, I am going to teach you how this is done using cPanel, and phpMYadmin, or your respective hosting accounts administration panel.
First things first, you will need to access phpMYadmin. Details on how to access this within your hosting accounts administration panel should be easy to source out through your hosting provider, or your welcome email that you received when you first signed up. For those of you who are not all that fluent when it comes to hosting accounts, phpMYadmin is the area in your hosting account where you can modify, import and export databases. In all essence, a highly sensitive part of your hosting account, so please be sure to follow my instructions correctly today.
In phpMYadmin, select the database that your WordPress blog uses. If you are unfamiliar with which database this is, just take a look in your WP-config file, as this will contain the right details. Once you know what database you are using, select it, and click on the export button. In here, you can simply download the database as a plain sql file to your computer.
Next, enter the administration panel for the hosting account that you are transferring your blog to, and create a new database and user, plus assign the user to the new database with full permissions. Again, instructions on how to do this will vary between hosting accounts, but will be easy to source out through your providers support documentation.
Next, enter your phpMYadmin area and select the newly created database. As you will be able to see, the database has no tables and no data contained, which is completely normal as it is new. All that you will need to do at this point is import the original database into the new one by clicking the import button, browsing to the original sql file that you downloaded, and upload it. Once this has completed, it is very well worth your while to navigate into the database, and just check that data has actually been imported properly.
By now, you have a good idea how to migrate WordPress databases to a new hosting account or server. Sounds easy, doesn't it? That’s because it is. That said, there is still some risk that things can go wrong, so my advice to you is to practice this process a bit, as if you don't know what you are doing, you can do more trouble than good. Take your time, get to know the process, gain some confidence, and you will soon be on your way.
