Shopping around armed with the right information is the most powerful way to ensure a good deal on any product and personal loans are no different.
Here’s just five simple steps you can take to ensure you get the best cheap personal loan rate.
Check Your Credit Rating
For as little as £2 (and free with some offers) you can check your credit records with the three major agencies (Equifax, Experian and Callcredit). If you find any errors in your credit file you can request that they be corrected or, at the very least, add a note to your record explaining any reasons for mistakes which potential lenders could take into account and potentially prevent application rejections or higher rates.
Watch Out For Balance Transfer Borrowing
Transferring the balance of an existing credit card to a new one offering low or no interest period can be a prudent way to manage your finances if used correctly. They should not be viewed as an easy way to get cheap money as purchases will often be liable to the full interest rate and it's important to ensure you are disciplined in saving enough money to be able to clear and remaining balance transfer amount after the offer period has ended.
Don't Rule Out Cards
With interest rates considerably higher than personal loans and rates which are variable rather than fixed, credit cards might seem a foolish way to borrow money. In some cases, though, cards can make for better deals than traditional loans. That's partly because many cards have deal for new customers offering low or zero rates in the first year on purchases -- though the rate shoots up after that point. But it's also because cards allow you to repay whenever you like (aside from the monthly minimum repayment), meaning that if you are able to pay off a chunk of the borrowing earlier than expected, you save a bundle in interest. As always, though, remember that you shouldn't borrow unless you have a reasonable plan for how you will repay the money: even with a card, budgeting for regular repayments is a good idea.
Crunch The Numbers
With different interest rates and repayment periods on offer it can be confusing doing a comparison of personal loans. However, it's handy to remember that the longer you borrow money for the more it is likely to cost you. So try to borrow for the shortest period you can afford. Whilst you should always compare costs carefully, often a shorter repayment period will be cheaper than lower rates. For example, a four year loan with an 8% rate will be cheaper than a five year loan at 7%. Also bear in mind that the APR is designed to compare loans over a year and doesn't always reveal the full costs of borrowing.
Get On Course
If you need money to study a vocational course, you may be able to get a particularly cheap loan. If you are on a course where you aren't eligible for a standard student loan (those designed for standard degree courses), the Learning and Skills Council will pay the interest on your loan for the duration of your course and one month after that. The drawback is that the loans are only available through Barclays and the Co-op, and that if you haven't repaid by a month after your course finishes, you start accruing interest at 9.9%. That's much more than most loans for this amount, so it may be worth taking a loan out elsewhere and paying off the balance if you aren't able to repay by this time.
