An Overview of the Proxy by Peter Garant
Whenever you look for applications that will help you get over filtering software or a network firewall, the term proxy will often be encountered. By understanding what it means, you will be able to determine just how you can use it and how it can serve you best.
One of the things that you need to understand, and one that causes a lot of confusion, is that the word is used to denote the server and also the software used. For example, if you install the software, it will connect to the server and then download the picture or access the website that you asked for. In this case, both the software that connects to the server and the software are both called proxy.
The way this works is essential for someone who wants to use the service. The server acts and behaves like a different address or host, so that the firewall or filtering application installed in your computer system will not realize that you are the one trying to access the website. Ordinarily, when you access a banned website, the filtering application will detect your IP address and block it. That is also how a firewall installed on the network works.
However with a proxy server, you can trick the application. This utility courses your request through it, so in effect it bypasses your blocking software and allows you to gain access to the site you want.
If you want to install this application, you need to be aware of what applications are available. Once you pick the right one, you just need to download and install it. Read the help file carefully, and install according to the instructions.
Most of these applications are freeware although there are some shareware proxy software types too. Another important thing that you will have to consider will be a list of servers. Because these tend to come and go, you need one that is constantly updated. The same thing applies with the software you will be using of course. Some of them may also have some features that require some tweaking. If you are a new user, look for utilities that are easy to install and also use. Reading reviews will be helpful.
As long as you follow the instructions, you will have no problems using a proxy server or software and you can access all those sites that are banned by your network.
