A Look at PCB Manufacturing

PCB manufacturing is a complex, multi-stepped process that demands strict definitions and tolerances. Circuit board manufacturers work hard to meet both your project needs and those engineering standards. Some become generalists who meet a wide variety of PCB production needs and others become specialist known industry-wide for their depth of skill. Either way, they all go through roughly the same process when manufacturing their PCBs.

Get a closer look at the PCB manufacturing process.

PCB Manufacturing Steps
You will probably never create a printed circuit board from scractch, but understanding the steps in the process can be very helpful when dealing with a PCB manufacturer. Let’s take a look at the general steps required for PCB manufacturing:

1.Generate Film
The film is generated from your design files and is an exact replica of your design.

2.Raw Material Is Sheared
The next step is to create double-sided, copper-clad boards to Industry standard thicknesses of 0.059”.

3.Drilling Holes
Through holes are drilled using NC machines and carbide drills.

4.Electroless Copper
To ensure proper contact with component leads, a thin layer of copper is applied to the hole barrels.

5.Apply Image
A photosensitive dryfilm is applied to the panel. Just like photography, a light source is used to expose the panel. Some are areas are developed, while other aren’t.

6.Pattern Plating
Copper is electroplated to the through holes and trace areas. The surface is then coated with tin.

7.Strip & Etch
After the dryfilm is removed, the exposed copper is etched away to reveal the circuit design. The tin applied in Step 6 protects the circuitry.

8.Solder Mask
A solder mask that prevents soldering certain areas of the board are applied to everything except the solder pads.

9.Solder Coat
Solder is applied to solder pads in a tank of liquid solder.

10.Nomenclature Application
White-lettered nomenclature is applied by silk screen.

11.Fabricating the Board
The finished board is then routed from the larger panel using NC equipment.

Some multilayer boards may have to go through different or additional steps, but the basic process is the same.
