Accounting Firms & Email- a Number of Practices Routinely Imperil Confidential Client Information
A lot of accounting practices have adopted email as a reliable and secure form of communication. This is unfortunate because email is far from well protected. A number of practices routinely dispatch tax documents, QuickBooks files, and other personal client data by email, and this is unwise. It puts clients at risk of becoming victims of lots of crimes, most notoriously identity theft. Look after your clients. Never presume that email is a secure way to dispatch sensitive information. An email will pass through a dozen or more servers before reaching it's destination. Third party servers are often poorly patched, obsolete, and otherwise neglected. Even well tended mail servers can play host to Trojans that will quietly forward your emails to a hacker, most likely by posting them to a website. All it takes is one hacked server along the way to intercept your email, and you'll never know what happened.
Encryption can make it harder to open an email or attachment, but it does nothing to prevent it from being intercepted.
