Trends and Changes in the PCB Industry
IPC has released its annual PCB industry state of the union, PCB Production Report for the Year 2010. It is full of both ordinary and interesting printed circuit board news. ICP’s report also contains some surprising information. Here is some food for thought:
- Asia builds over 87% of all PCBs
- Asia uses 90% of the world’s laminate
- Metal prices increased by 41% in 2010
- Rigid-flex, the fastest growing industry technology, grew by 87% compared to 2009
The report also shows that:
- The overall market for PCB production in 2010 was $54.7 billion
- There are 2,600 PCB manufacturing facilities worldwide
- The worldwide PCB market grew by 20% in 2010
- Employment in the industry was 22,000 down from 95,00 in 2000

China Still Making Waves
Not surprisingly, some of the biggest news in the PCB industry came out of China. With more than 1,100 circuit board manufacturing facilities, it leads all other nations. That number includes facilities owned or managed by companies from other countries. Nearly 90% of all boards produced in 2010 were manufactured in China or other Asian nations.
Here is the market share for PCB production broken down by region:
1. Asia - 87% ($47.5 billion)
2. North America - 6.7% ($3.7 billion)
3. Europe - 5.2% ($2.7 billion)
4. Mideast/Africa - 0.4% ($220 million)
5. South America - 0.2% ($110 million)
Printed Circuit Board News from the U.S. Market
Growth of 7% in the U.S. PCB manufacturing industry was offset by continued job losses. The number of PCB manufacturers in all of North America fell to only 314 from an historic high of 1,800.
The numbers don’t tell the whole story, however. Nearly $3 billion of U.S. PCB sales came from U.S.-owned companies doing business in Asia. The uptick in sales can be attributed in part to the decreased cost of doing business in Asia.

The global economic downturn couldn’t keep the worldwide PCB market from experiencing continued growth. And there is no sign that current demand for printed circuits will do anything but grow. The PCB industry can continue to expect to reap the benefits of that demand.
