You may be considering making the switch to a new web host and if this is the case then there are a few things you should avoid. With me owning hundreds of different websites, I think I am highly qualified to discuss the mistakes you might make. If you want to avoid a lot of heartache then you should learn from my mistakes. Here are just some of the things you should not do when changing web host.
¢ You should avoid making the switch altogether unless it is necessary. If something is not broken then there is no point in trying to fix it. Things can go wrong when you move host, and you always take a risk by moving to somebody new. You might end up regretting this move if your current provider is offering a reasonable service.
¢ Unless you have everything fully backed up, don't even think about moving your website. Unless you have this backup, you could find that you end up losing your website data.
¢ It might be better to pay someone to make the move for you if you can afford this payment. Some web hosts will even move the site for you for free and this is definitely an offer worth accepting. It is still a good idea to back up your site even if someone else will be looking after the switch for you.
¢ Try to ensure that you have a bit of spare time available for making the move. This is not something that you want to rush too much. The move is usually straight forward but if things do go wrong you will need a bit of time to sort everything out.
¢ During the first 48 hours after you make the move you will not be able to add new content, and new comments might be lost. Telling visitors not to leave comments during this time is the best course of action.
