Essential Advice Concerning Accounting Websites and Hosting Services

If you're just starting out with a website, or are thinking about creating a website for your accounting firm there are a few tips you'll want to find out about before you really start to develop it. Designing accounting websites is like any other skill. It's easy once you know how to do it. There are certain businesses that have spent years developing websites for the accounting profession, and they have a few useful standards for your consideration...

Web Hosting and Features :

Many web hosting companies will throw in other features such as a free domain name or free email hosting along with the website hosting. Of course I don't need to tell you that nothing is really free, only bundled into the service offering, so don't buy a package with features you don't need. Search engine submission is a popular offering that NOBODY needs any more (search engines no longer use submissions to rank pages), and features like shopping carts may be useful to retail businesses but it's useless for a professional service like an accounting firm. Take some time to shop around a little. You'll find it's pretty easy to get a lot of solid comparative information by doing a few simple Google searches for keywords like "website hosting".

Determining which package is best for you can be daunting but if you break down the elements of your site you can ensure that you're picking the best option for you. For example, most GoDaddy web hosting plans come with email and a certain amount of server space that you can store your data on (images, videos, etc). Network Solutions, while more expensive, offers packages that include a domain name. Other packages frequently offered by website hosts include Google advertising credits, File Transfer options, and other features.

If you won't be utilizing email addresses @yourdomainname.com, but will instead be using a free gmail or hotmail account for example, then you don't need to look at a plan that includes email.

Domain names:

Picking the right domain name is extremely important to your business. A good domain name should be short, easy remember, easy to spell, and should reinforce your name and/or the name or function of your firm. Using important keywords in your domain name can be helpful in getting your website a better ranking in the search engines. If you're looking to score well in the search engines try to include your local market as a keyword (Brownsville, Tampa, Atlanta, etc) and a keyword like "CPA","accounting",or "tax". Most of the simple combinations are already taken, but it's fairly easy to include a variation or specialty like "BrownvilleCostructionAccounting" or "TampaAccountingSolutions". As a rule ".com" domain names are superior to alternate domain extensions like ".biz", ".net", ".us", ".org", etc. Try to avoid breaking the keywords up with dashes and underscores, but if you can't get a decent domain name without doing so avoid using underscores. Domain name registration can be done separate from web hosting. In general, each has separate fee, although some companies will package them together. Domain registration fees are usually done on an annual basis, whereas web hosting is often done on a monthly basis.

If you allow your host to register your domain name for you there are some precautions you need to take. Make sure that the domain is registered in your name and that, if you ever leave the hosting company you'd be able to retain ownership of the domain name.

What the Heck is a CPanel?

A cPanel is a control panel where you'll be able to make many advanced settings changes to your various web hosting features. Your cPanel is your domains central nervous system, and it's vital that you be able to access it. It maps the domain to your website and your email to your inbox. There are all kinds of advanced features on your cPanel. It can be used to redirect pages and even point multiple domains to a single website. Most web hosting companies give you cPanel access, but some don't. Even though you may never need to use a cPanel, it's a good idea to find out if your web hosting company has one and if you're able to access it.

Online Security:

This is something the beginner-user may not be concerned with, but if you're going to be storing QuickBooks files online, or accepting credit card payments, then you'll want to listen up. Having an SSL Certificate (Secure Sockets Layer Certificate) can ensure your site visitors that any confidential information they submit through your site will be handled securely. A lot of companies offer SSL certificates. GoDaddy, VeriSign, and DigiCert are the largest. You've frequently seen secured pages, but you might not have realized it at the time. If you have ever noticed a humble padlock symbol in a corner of your internet browser that's a indicator that you are looking at a secure page. Failure to properly secure your client's private information won't just cost you clients, it may also get you into genuine legal trouble. Accounting firms are financial institutions according to the Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act and are lawfully compelled to take adequate steps to protect their clients' private information.
