The ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System were recalled in August 2010 by their manufacturer, DePuy Orhtopaedics. Some of the countries where the hip replacement devices were sold were in the United States, Great Britain, Australia, Ireland and Canada. Data from foreign joint registries shows the high 5-year failure rate of the implants and one in eight recipients would require to have a revision surgery to augment the damage inflicted by the devices. Pain, stiffness in the hip area, difficulty walking, and metallosis, or what is called metal poisoning are some of the complications experienced by victims of the hip replacement recall .
